Youth Ministry Tips For New Leaders

Being a youth ministry leader is truly rewarding work. You get to spend your time helping children and teenagers figure out how to live happy, fulfilling, productive, faith-based lives. You get to work within your community and be of service to others.

This is work that most people are happy to get into. However, it isn't always easy. There are some things that you need to know before getting started if you want things to go smoothly in your new role. Most importantly you need to know the importance of staying in touch with yourself, connected to your community and open to learning on a daily basis.

The most important thing about being a youth minister is that you must be absolutely in touch with yourself. This sounds contradictory at first glance. After all, youth ministry work is all about being in service to others, right? That is true. However, you cannot give anything to others unless you have taken proper care of yourself. A youth minister is first and foremost a leader.

This means that you must set a positive example for others. Setting a positive example requires that you are in touch with who you are, what your beliefs are and how you present yourself to the world around you. When you have a solid understanding of who you are, you present a genuine self to others. That is something that kids can see (and need) in a role model. Although you don't want your ministry work to be all about you, it does have to start with you.

The work might start with you but it definitely doesn't end there. It is also very important that you stay connected to your whole community. There are two main reasons for this. The first reason is that you will need the strength of this community to maintain your role as a leader. Youth ministry work is very rewarding but it can also be very difficult.

You need to have people you can turn to for the support that you need so that you can serve as a strong leader to these kids. Additionally, you will want to set a positive example for the children as someone who participates in activities benefiting and involving the whole community. You want to set examples first before you ask kids to do anything and, of course, it is important that the kids learn to be upstanding members of the church community.
